The fascinating history of prefabricated homes, and their interesting interior designs, is on view in New York until
20 June 2007.
Staged by the New York School of Interior Design, the exhibition features copies of vintage catalogues for prospective homebuyers. Amazingly, homebuyers in North America have been buying pre-fabricated homes from catalogues for nearly a century.
Big mail order companies like Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward have been in on the act since 1914. The catalogues have a choice of interior design specifications which the buyer could mull over and select.
Colourful and informative, the catalogues include many choices of architecture, perspective views and interior floor plans. The most modern home gadgets were included including kitchenware and lighting. Curtains, furniture, shelving, cupboards and cabinets were also there.
In addition to the catalogues, at the exhibition you'll also be able to look at thesis projects by the spring 2007 graduates of the New York School of Interior Design.
The show is open at the following times: Monday - Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm, closed Sundays and holidays. It is free, accessible to people with disabilities, and open to all.
